Ducks Earn Sixth Seed in 2010 MCLA Tournament

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon men’s lacrosse has secured the No. 6 seed in the 2010 MCLA National Championship Tournament in Denver, Colo. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The tournament is set to take place May 11-15 and the Ducks have been slated to play the No. 11 seed Colorado Buffaloes on Tuesday, May 11 in the first round of play.

Oregon enters the tournament with a season record of 10-4, including a most recent win over the Simon Fraser Clansman in Bend, Ore. on May 2. With a 14-8 victory, the Ducks earned the 2010 Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League title and an automatic bid to the national tournament. The Ducks were led to victory by 2010 PNCLL Defensive MVP Nick Johnston, who had 23 saves on the day and quarterbacked multiple fast break goals for the Ducks. Junior midfielder Kevin Clark (2 goals), senior midfielder Chad Loescher (2 assists), junior attackmen Justin Eckenroad (2 goals, 1 assist) and Max Schlesinger (2 goals, 1 assist) led the scoring attack for the Ducks.
The Colorado Buffaloes, Oregon’s first round opponent, enters the tournament with an at-large bid and a record of 6-8. The Buffaloes have had regular season victories over teams including the BYU Cougars, Simon Fraser Clansmen, Michigan State Spartans, and a win over the University of Michigan that snapped the Wolverines 49-game winning streak. The Buffaloes most recent game was a loss to BYU on April 30 in the first round of Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference playoffs.

If the Ducks advance over the Buffaloes, Oregon will go on to face the winner of the game between the No. 3 Arizona State Sun Devils and No. 14 Cal Poly Mustangs. Also in Oregon’s side of the bracket are the No. 2 Colorado State Rams, No. 7 Florida State Seminoles, No. 10 Simon Fraser Clansmen, and No. 15 Boston College Eagles.

Civil War match up highlights exciting day of lacrosse action

On Saturday, April 17th, thousands of fans from across Oregon will gather to celebrate one of the biggest lacrosse rivalries of the year between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State University Beavers. The game will be hosted by Sunset Lacrosse, and is part of an all day event powered by Warrior Sports at Sunset High School in Portland beginning at 8:30am.

The event is the Second Annual Civil War Lacrosse Game Day which was created as a way to bring together fans throughout the state in celebrating Oregon lacrosse. Throughout the day there will be four exciting lacrosse games, clinics, contests, raffles, vendor shopping, and meet and greets with professional players. The event is friendly to all ages and is sure to provide entertainment for everyone.

The event’s highlight game between the Ducks and Beavers is sure to be full of passion and intensity. The Ducks had a successful 2009 campaign, with a record of 11-7. They finished second in the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League conference, which led to a trip to the national championship tournament. UO is currently ranked 9th in the standings for college club lacrosse teams in the US on both the Lax Mag TOP23 and the LAX Power polls. The Beavers are an up-and-coming program that is currently ranked second in the PNCLL division. With a 6-6 record this past season and a 14-6 loss to UO in last year’s Civil War game, OSU will be looking to avenge the 2009 defeat.

Also competing at the event is the 2009 OHSLA champion, Oregon Episcopal School (OES), and the 2009 semi-finalist, Sunset High School. Both teams are currently in the Top 5 preseason rankings for 2010. After last year’s narrow defeat by OES at the inaugural Civil War Lacrosse Game Day, Sunset will be seeking payback against one of its biggest rivals and competitors.

During the course of the event, there will be two clinics hosted by some of lacrosse’s top talent. Lorne Smith, President and Director of Lorne Smith Lacrosse Camps and sales representative for Warrior Sports, will be coaching a clinic called “6v6 Motion Offense – Playing in Rhythm” which focuses on learning how to anticipate and move together as a team to attack a defense. Team USA and Warrior Player’s Club member Mike Leveille will be giving tips and tricks on how to beat a man from X to score and draw double teams in his clinic “Dodging from Behind for Attackmen and Inverting Middies.”

Those in attendance will also be able to show off their skills in the Warrior “Fastest Shot in Oregon” contest. The competition spans across four age divisions (U11, U13, U15, and HS) with the top two finalists from each contending against one another during the Civil War halftime event. Four winners will receive an unstrung Warrior Noz head, “The lightest head in lacrosse.”

Also making an appearance at the event will be vendors Lorne Smith, Warrior, Brine, Rhino Lacrosse, Bigfoot Lacrosse, Lacrosse Northwest, Chopstix Lacrosse, Sunset Lacrosse, University of Oregon Boosters, and Oregon State University Boosters.

Raffle tickets will be available for purchase through the Sunset Lacrosse tent. Prizes include donations from various companies throughout the community. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the University of Oregon and Oregon State, and Sunset lacrosse programs.

Admission prices will be $4 for adults and $2 for kids and students ages 5-18, but only $1 for kids and students who wear a lacrosse jersey to the event. Kids ages 5 and under get in free.

Team Sports Participants Continues to Erode
According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's Sports, Fitness, and Recreation Participation Overview (2010 edition), baseball, football and basketball all continued to show notable declines in participants in 2009. Outdoor soccer and outdoor softball saw smaller declines. But notable gains were seen in lacrosse, rugby and ice hockey.

Baseball participation was down 7.9% in 2009 to 13.9 million, and is now down 12.7% over the nine-year period since 1988. Basketball was off 8.6% to 24 million participants in 2009 and is now off 8.4% since 1998.

In the football category, tackle was down 11.7% to 6.8 million participants last year. No figure was available for the nine-year trend. Touch football was down 14.6% to 9 million in 2009; flag football slid 10.4% to 6.6 million.

On the brighter side, ice hockey participants increased 12.2% to 2.1 million in 2009 although it remains down 12.3% since 1998. Lacrosse participants added another 6.2% to 1.2 million and has increased a whopping 131.1% since 1998. Also seeing growth was rugby, which gained 8.7% to 750,000 participants in 2009.

Outdoor softball lost 3.7% of its participants to 13.7 million although indoor softball grew 3.7% to 4.9 million participants. Similarly, indoor soccer participants gained 3.7% to 4.9 million but outdoor soccer participants slid 3.7% to 13.7 million.

Field hockey was down 4.7% to 1.07 million in 2009.

Cheerleading was down 2.2% to 3.1 million in 2009 but has grown 15.2% since 1988.

Court volleyball decreased 11.3% to 7.3 million and grass volleyball was down 4.6% to 4.9 million but beach volleyball increased 7.3% 4.5 million. Beach volleyball, however, is down 14.7% since 1998.

Wrestling participation declined 11.2% last year and is now down 20.3% since 2008.

Westview Youth Lacrosse, Beaverton Youth Lacrosse part ways over unresolved differences

BEAVERTON -- Citing ongoing philosophical and management differences, Westview Youth Lacrosse has decided to severe ties with Beaverton Youth Lacrosse this spring and set up a rival program made up of players recruited from within the Westview High School boundaries.

After six weeks of intense meetings with a mediator from Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District, representatives from both organizations said they were unable to resolve their differences and would part ways.
Westview joins Sunset Youth Lacrosse as the second program to break away from the parent organization in the past two years, resulting in the siphoning off of more than 300 players from the Beaverton organization. Beaverton membership stands at about 700.

Bill Kirby, Westview vice president, said he was disappointed with the outcome but that his association would operate independently this season with 10 teams on alternative fields, most of them privately owned.

"We've had a record turnout of players and need to focus on moving forward with our season," he said.

Earlier this year, Westview board members called for replacing Beaverton Youth Lacrosse's single league, which encompasses the Beaverton School District, with a confederation of satellite teams. Each would be aligned with one of the five Beaverton high schools to include names and uniforms that reflected strong neighborhood affiliations.

Beaverton Youth Lacrosse rejected the proposal, instead offering Westview more money to assist with recruiting players, full participation in its Saturday league and representation on the organization's steering committee. Beaverton also insisted -- and Tualatin Hills agreed -- that it be the sole negotiator for use of the park district's fields. That was a particular sticking point for the Westview league.

Westview turned down the offer.

"We feel strongly that what we proposed represented the future of youth lacrosse," Kirby said. "We know that we can recruit more kids to the sport if they play for their neighborhood team."

Since its inception eight years ago, Beaverton Youth Lacrosse has attracted hundreds of boys and girls, from first grade through middle school, who live within the Beaverton School District boundaries.

The organization trained its coaches, provided uniforms, hired officials and rented fields from Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District, under the auspices of a single, districtwide league. This often meant that teams had a mix of players from throughout the area.

But parents in the Sunset and Westview neighborhoods complained that the structure limited the sport's growth and left them out of the decision-making. Several pointed to soccer, baseball and football as youth sports that are organized along high school boundaries.

"We decided to do our own thing two years ago and now have become one of the largest programs in the state," said Mike Parker, a founding member of Beaverton Youth Lacrosse who left that group and is now a coach and board member with Sunset Youth Lacrosse. "Recruiting locally is a natural way to do things."

Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation found itself caught up in the fray over the winter, when it announced that the district would negotiate field rentals only with the Beaverton league, virtually shutting out Westview teams.

"Using one volunteer-based affiliate for each sport is an operating model that has worked successfully for THPRD and the community for decades," district officials announced. The decision angered parents from the Westview league and left them scrambling to find alternative sites for practices and games.

Kirby said his association has negotiated with the Oak Hills Homeowners Association to play home contests on fields at Northwest 153rd Avenue and Oak Hills Drive. Discussions are under way, he added, for use of other privately owned fields in the Beaverton area.

Most area youth lacrosse programs kick off their seasons at the end of this month and early April.

# 7 Oregon Improves to 5-0, Looks Toward Portland State and Michigan

EUGENE, OR. – Oregon men’s lacrosse continued its unbeaten streak Saturday afternoon after
handing northwest rival Washington a 15-3 loss. In the third game of a four game home stretch,
the Ducks took 55 shots on goal and the steady weekend performance helped the team move up
to #7 in the latest national MCLA poll.

In the previous two games against Montana and Santa Clara, the Ducks had struggled to find
rhythm in the first quarter. However, that was not the case Saturday, as the team came out firing on the Huskies and took a 4-0 lead through the first period. Two of the goals came just before penalties, and one came from an outside rip by senior midfielder Erik Lyneis that went in top corner.

Oregon’s ride was hard for Washington to get past, and the Ducks continued to control the flow
of the game after a 3-1 second quarter score. The third quarter brought physical play from both
sides. While the Huskies put in a goal, the Ducks scored three, including a nifty bounce-in shot from junior midfielder Kevin Clark with an assist from sophomore attack Corbin Root. The same story continued for the Ducks in the fourth, as the depth of the team took over and
never let down on the visiting Huskies. Oregon put the game away by controlling the tempo of
the contest and adding five goals to the score, to make the final tally 15-3.

On what was the third weekend of sun for the Ducks at home, Kevin Clark and senior attack
Justin Blackmore contributed a couple hat tricks for the home team, and sophomore midfielder
Chris Kuhn provided an impressive goal on a fast break run in the second quarter. Oregon wraps up its four game home stretch this Saturday against a visiting Portland State team.

The Vikings come will come to Eugene with a lot of momentum after scoring 17 goals in last
weekend’s victory over Humboldt State. After this weekend’s matchup, the Ducks will look to
their Easter Trip that will include games against #1 ranked Michigan in the Patriot Cup in
Dallas, Texas and a contest at Michigan State.

The Ducks and Vikings will faceoff on Saturday, March 13th at 1:00 p.m. at the Next Turf Field.

The Western men’s lacrosse team earned themselves another win this weekend. The Vikings beat rival Western Oregon University 17-12 on Saturday afternoon while the sun beat down on Wade King Turf Field.

RHINO LACROSSE HIRES NEW DIRECTOR OF LACROSSE OPERATIONS

PORTLAND, OR – Rhino Lacrosse, Oregon’s premier lacrosse organization headed up by Ryan Powell, has just named Scott DeMonte as the new Director of Lacrosse Operations. DeMonte, who has joined Rhino from i9 Sports, will oversee all the planning and daily operations of select teams, leagues, clinics and recruiting assistance.

“Scott will expand Rhino Lacrosse in our effort to provide players with the best lacrosse training, and skill development options. He has the business and lacrosse background to make Rhino one of the top lacrosse organizations nationally and we’re thrilled he has joined our team” says Rhino Lacrosse founder Ryan Powell, “Scott is one of the most respected lacrosse coaches on both coasts. His ties to lacrosse across the country make him a tremendous asset to our Rhino players who may want to play lacrosse at the next level.”

As Director of Lacrosse Operations, DeMonte will be responsible for coordinating all facets of lacrosse events and logistical planning. Camps, clinics, tournaments, training and elite-level travel select teams will all fall under DeMonte’s reign as he helps increase Rhino’s lacrosse growth on the West Coast and in the United States.

"I couldn’t be happier to join Rhino Lacrosse. I was part of the first fall league in 2006 and to see where it has come over the last four years is amazing. I look forward to helping bring Rhino Lacrosse and it’s players to even greater heights,” DeMonte said.

Hailing form Huntington, New York, DeMonte played lacrosse for Farmingdale College on Long Island and the University of Rhode Island. He has his BA in Business from University of Rhode Island and Masters in Physical Education from Hoftsra University. His lacrosse accolades include JUCO Academic All-American, two-time First Team All League (Pioneer League), Team Captain and MVP Senior Year. He was also the head lacrosse coach for SUNY Plattsburgh(2003-2006) in NY and the University of California at Santa Barbara (1999-2003) where he was named League and National Coach of the Year in 2003. DeMonte has also coached internationally in seven foreign countries as a member of the coaching staff for USA West which included coaching in the 2002 World Games in Perth, Australia. Most recently he was the varsity offensive coordinator for Lake Oswego HS in 2008 and 2009 where they captured two league titles for the first time ever. DeMonte lives in Portland with his wife Jess, son Will, and dog Karl.

Ducks Take Down Broncos, Remain Perfect on the Season

EUGENE, OR. – Oregon men’s lacrosse enjoyed another successful game Saturday afternoon, taking down Santa Clara University by a score of 15-4. In front of a large crowd, the Ducks provided a steady game of offensive pressure by taking 47 shots on the day. After a slow first quarter, the Ducks came out with a 2-0 lead with goals from junior attack Max Schlesinger and senior midfielder Chris Brown. Early on, ground balls were the main issue as the Ducks were still finding their rhythm.

The rhythm was found in the second quarter as the Ducks put up four goals while giving back two to the Broncos. Through one half, the score was 6-2 and the Ducks rested up for what would be explosive third and fourth quarters. In the third, the Ducks took 14 shots on Santa Clara goalie, Luke Kantola, while putting three in the back of the net.

In the fourth, Oregon’s depth and speed proved again to be too much for the visiting team, as the Ducks put in six goals, including a heads up goal at midfield from senior defenseman Mike
Gerrard on an open net. The Ducks outscored the Broncos 6-2 in the fourth, to make the final
score of 15-4 on the day.

Max Schlesinger (three goals, one assist) and senior captain Justin Blackmore (three goals) each provided a hat trick for the Ducks, and Chris Brown added two goals and one assist. Junior
defensive anchor Nick Johnston never let up in goal, providing 11 saves on the day. The Ducks continue their home stretch next weekend in a PNCLL division contest against the University of Washington. The Huskies come into Eugene with a 13-7 win over Boise State in their last game.

The Ducks and Huskies will faceoff on Saturday, March 6th at 1:00 p.m. at the Next Turf Field.

Patriot Cup Schedule Announced, Oregon and Michigan Receive Marque Matchup

DALLAS, TX. – Premier lacrosse will be returning to Dallas, Texas on March 20th for the Patriot
Cup, a showcase that features some of the top ranked high school and college teams in the
nation. The host committee for the Cup has released the schedule for the event, a day that will be
highlighted by a nightcap matchup between the University of Oregon (9) and University of
Michigan (1) at Southern Methodist University’s Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
The full lineup of the Patriot Cup on Saturday, March 20th in Ford Stadium includes:
10:00 a.m. - St. Mark’s School of Texas vs. Loomis Chaffee School
12:00 p.m. - Nazareth College vs. Western New England College
2:30 p.m. - Highland Park High School vs. Mullen High School
4:30 p.m. - SMU vs. A&M
7:00 p.m. - University of Oregon vs. University of Michigan
Programs participating in the Saturday lineup feature two high school teams, two NCAA
Division III teams, and four of the top MCLA programs in the nation. There will also be both
college and high school games played at Ford Stadium throughout the week leading up to the
Saturday lineup, still to be announced.
In the marquee matchup of the day, the Ducks will have a chance to knock off two-time
defending MCLA champion, Michigan. With two prominent programs facing-off under the
lights in Texas, this game is shaping up to be one of the premier contests of the season. All
proceeds from the event will go to the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization that
assists wounded men and women of the United States armed forces.

Ducks Start Strong in Seattle

Seattle, WA – The University of Oregon Ducks started their season strongly at the third annual
Pac-10 Shootout at the University of Washington. After playing the Cal Golden Bears (12) and
Stanford Cardinal (23), the Ducks (9) are undefeated heading into their first PNCLL game
against Montana at home.

Saturday, the Ducks played Cal in what was considered by many the game of the week for
PNCLL teams. The teams played even in the first quarter, each scoring two goals but the
aggressive Oregon ride kept possession in their favor for the majority of play. This stifling ride would prove to be a trend for the game and the weekend as the Ducks pulled away in the second quarter and continued to put shot after shot on goal. The University of Oregon put a total of 42 shots on cage and forced the Cal Goalkeeper Forrest Cheney, who had a very good performance in goal, to make 23 saves in the contest. As the game went on Oregon’s depth and their time of possession wore down Cal and proved to be the difference in Oregon’s 14-7 win.

Some top performers for the Ducks were sophomore midfielder Chris Brown (2G, 1A,) sophomore
attackman Sean Silverstein (2G,) and senior captain Brett Whyte who controlled the faceoff
game for the Ducks.

After their big opening win against Cal, Oregon looked to Stanford on Sunday. Similar to the
first game of the weekend, the Ducks’ aggressive ride and team depth would play a major role in
controlling the pace of the contest. Oregon ran three lines of midfielders from the opening
faceoff and controlled the tempo of the game by again keeping possession of the ball for the
majority of play. The Ducks’ had three 2 goal scorers in senior captain Justin Blackmore and
sophomore attackmen Sean Silverstein and Max Schlesinger and came out on top, 12-6.

This coming week the Ducks look to continue their strong start in their first PNCLL Division I
game against the University of Montana, who will be playing their first game of the 2010 season.

Seattle, WA. – The 2010 University of Oregon men’s lacrosse season will begin this weekend when they face off against the Cal Golden Bears and Stanford Cardinal at the third annual Pac-10 Shootout in Seattle, WA. The 9th ranked Ducks waste no time starting their tough 2010 schedule as Cal is ranked 12th and Stanford is the 23rd ranked team in the nation. Along with Cal and Stanford, Oregon State, the University of Washington, and USC will compete in the Pac-10 Shootout hosted at Washington’s IMA Field #3.

The Ducks start out their weekend against Cal at 4pm on Saturday and will play Stanford Sunday at 2pm. This is the first time Oregon has competed in the Pac-10 Shootout and according to Coach Joe Kerwin, they are “very excited about opening the season with some quality teams like Cal and Stanford. These games will definitely give us an early indication on what we need to do to get to the level we want to be this season.”

Champion Challenge Games to Air on ESPNU

CHARLOTTE, N.C. and BALTIMORE – ESPNU and US Lacrosse announced today that the sports network will air the U.S. men’s national team vs. Duke and the U.S. women’s national team vs. Duke games, part of the 2010 Champion Challenge at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The U.S. men’s national team game will air on Jan. 31 at 10 p.m. with an encore presentation on Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. The U.S. women’s national team game will air on Feb. 1 at 12 a.m. with a re-air on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.

The fifth annual Champion Challenge will take place Jan. 30 – 31. The event, organized by US Lacrosse and sponsored by Champion Athleticwear, will feature the U.S. men’s and women’s national lacrosse teams as well as Duke University men’s and women’s teams, the United States Military Academy’s men’s team, the University of Notre Dame and University of Florida women’s programs.

“US Lacrosse is dedicated to bringing more lacrosse to television and we’re pleased that ESPNU will air two Team USA games,” said Bill Schoonmaker, US Lacrosse’s chief operating officer. “The U.S. national teams feature the best men’s and women’s lacrosse players in the world and the Duke men’s and women’s teams are two of the best college lacrosse programs in the country. These will be two very exciting match-ups.”

ESPNU recently announced that the network will lead ESPN's college lacrosse coverage with more games than ever before in 2010, including 40 men's and women's regular-season contests combined, in addition to one live game each on ESPN2 and ESPN360.com. The networks will televise 59 games overall, including the two Champion Challenge games, 42 regular-season contests (up from 30 in 2009) and 15 NCAA Tournament games across ESPNU, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN360.com.

Edmonton Rush acquires Portland's Ryan Powell

Edmonton, AB--Edmonton Rush General Manager/Head Coach announced today that the club has acquired forward Ryan Powell from the Colorado Mammoth in exchange for forward Callum Crawford.
Powell, an eight-year veteran, spent the last four seasons with the Portland LumberJax and was picked up by Orlando Titans in the 2009 NLL Dispersal Draft and then traded to Colorado Mammoth for Matt Danowski. Last season with the Jax, Powell notched 18 goals and 44 assists for 62 points, two shy of his career-best total logged one year earlier. Through 100 career NLL regular-season games, Powell has racked up 119 goals and 207 assists for 326 points along with 442 loose balls.

"Ryan will obviously play a significant role for us particularly as a set-up man with his excellent passing abilities," noted Keenan. "Ryan is also a big-game player as he showed during the Champion's Cup run with Portland two years ago. He will be an exciting complement to the much-improved offensive attack we have in store for the 2010 season."

The 31-year-old Syracuse University product had a career-high for goals in 2007 with 23, while last season's mark of 44 assists was the best of his career. The six-foot-one, 205 pounder had a pair of seven-point games last season with Portland. Powell had an outstanding playoff campaign with the Jax in '08, finishing second in scoring with 10 goals and 10 assists in just three games.

Before joining Portland, Powell spent one season with Anaheim and three with Buffalo.

In his lone season with the Rush, Crawford registered 19 goals and 22 assists for 41 points in 13 games.

The Rush opens the regular season on the road against the Washington Stealth on January 15 and the next day against the Colorado Mammoth at Pepsi Center on Saturday, January 16. The Rush opens the home regular season on Saturday, January 23 against the Buffalo Bandits at Rexall Place. Training Camp opens this weekend, December 5 at Leduc Recreation Centre.

Oregon Lacrosse Signs Nine Recruits for 2010-2011

University of Oregon head women's lacrosse coach Jen Larsen has signed nine prep athletes to National Letters of Intent. The future Ducks will formally join the program for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Maryland continues to be a recruiting hotbed for UO with four of the players hailing from the Old Line state. California is represented by a pair of Triple Threat LAX club players, and Larsen and her staff also tapped into Colorado, New Jersey and Ohio.

The Ducks begin the sixth season in program history on February 13, 2010 at Jacksonville (FL). Oregon's first home game is slated for February 21 vs. St. Bonaventure at Pape Field.

University of Oregon Fall Preview

Eugene, Or. –The University of Oregon men’s lacrosse team finished last season in Denver with what many of the players have called a “learning experience” for the young team and, after graduating only three starters, Oregon has their sights set on the National Championship Tournament once again.

After a tough week of tryouts, the Ducks have announced their roster for the 2009-2010 season and welcome sixteen new freshman to the team. Coach Joe Kerwin said, “We had a really competitive week of tryouts this year and I’m excited to see what these young guys can do. We had to make some tough decisions but I know that we’ll be putting the strongest team we can out on the field.”

Another new addition to the team is Head Coach Joe Kerwin, who returns to Eugene after a two year hiatus at Notre Dame de Namur. Senior attackman Justin Blackmore said of having Kerwin back, “You can tell that everyone’s really excited about the change just from the first couple weeks of practice. We know Coach Kerwin is going to be a good leader for the program and will take us where we want to go in the future.” Also, Assistant Coach Jon Bongiorno joins the Ducks after being an assistant and head coach at Eugene’s Marist High School for the last four years.

Despite the loss of three impact players from last years’ squad, the Ducks don’t think they will experience much of a drop off because of the depth and talent of the team that looks to replace them. The U of O will especially look to senior captains Justin Blackmore, Brett Whyte, Erik Lyneis, and Mike Gerrard, as well as juniors Nick Johnston, Kevin Clark, and Austin Zilis to lead the team on and off the field throughout the year.

The Ducks will start their fall season with scrimmages with on Saturday, October 24 from 11am- 4pm. Following a week of practice the annual Oregon Lacrosse Alumni Game will be played Friday, October 30 at 7pm under the lights of the University Nex-Turf field. And to finish up Fall Ball, the Ducks will host the annual University of Oregon Fall Classic Saturday, November 7. Teams participating in the Fall Classic include Oregon State, Western Oregon University, Willamette University, and the Portland Lacrosse Club.

HOOD RIVER SUMMER JAMBOREE

2 weekend ago Hood River hosted the Hood River HS Lax Jamboree at Hood River Valley High School . OES, Oregon City, Hood River, Glencoe and a combined team with players from Sheldon and Churchhill participated. Most games were on the stadium field. Two were on the football practice field. Each team played a minimum of 3 games with an hour rest between games. Two teams had to play a back to back game, no rest. The games were 25 minute running time halves with two OHSLA officials on each game.

Teams all had fun with it. Games were competitive and everyone got good playing time. It was a jamboree, so no tournament-style brackets (maybe next year).We don't have all the scores but think OES won all their games – they had 7-4 win over Hood River and 6-3 win over Sheldon/Churchill. Hood River and Sheldon Churchill played an exciting game where Hood River came back from down 5-1 at half to end tied 7-7. Hood River won against Glencoe 10-5, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and hanging on as Glencoe came back in the second half.

There was also a skills competition – fastest and most accurate shots. Good prizes donated from the local lacrosse shop, Shortt Supply = a Warrior EvoTi and Brine Clutch for 1st – Hood River players came in first, no it wasn’t rigged, just turned out that way.

So I'd heard about this for a while but just tried it last week and I have to say it was awesome. What is Chumash you ask? Its a version of lacrosse that is played 3 on 3 or 4 on 4 with one goal in the middle of the field that is six feet tall but only one foot wide.

The game really helps with the fundamentals of dodging and quick feeding and also trains you to deal with unsettled situations, because the whole game is pretty much an unsettled situation.

It also improves your shooting because its pretty darn hard to hit the goal. And, its great cardio.

In the summertime, when a lot of folks are trying to play / practice in small groups this is a great solution. Read more about it here

Joe Kerwin Returns as Head Coach at U. of Oregon

Eugene, Or. – After a successful season in which the University of Oregon returned to the MCLA National Championships in Denver, Co., big news came out from the Ducks camp yesterday with the announcement that former Duck Head Coach Joe Kerwin, who took Oregon to the National Championship in 2007, will return to Eugene. Kerwin took the job as head coach of Notre Dame De Namur University in 2008, the year after he not only led the Ducks to the National Championship but also won both the MCLA and PNCLL Coach of the Year awards. Kerwin led NDNU to a 16-6 record over his two seasons with the program.

Co-Head Coaches Andrew Clough and John Wright jointly decided to step down after Kerwin contacted the University of Oregon about a potential comeback citing his desire to return to Eugene and the University. Clough and Wright helped to rebuild the Oregon program in 2008 after a disappointing 2007 season. "I am very proud of our accomplishments this year," Coach Clough said. "Our goal this year was to put Oregon back on the map for premier MCLA lacrosse play. I believe we did just that. I am looking forward to seeing what this young team can do in the future." Coach Kerwin said of his decision to return, "This decision really wasn't about NDNU and their program. Coaching those guys was great and I have a great respect for the program that they have. Basically I just wanted to come back to Eugene because of the city and the love I have for the University."

When asked about the decision to step down, Coach Clough said, "It was an amicable and mutual decision. What we have here is a case where everyone involved was thinking about what is best for the program. I think this is definitely a positive step for the Ducks in that not only do we get a great coach in Coach Kerwin, but he also brings added legitimacy to the program from a NCAA DII school."

Both Coach Wright and Coach Clough have been asked to stay with the team and build on the accomplishments of this past year. Coach Clough is currently considering the opportunity while Coach Wright will travel back to his home state of North Carolina in order to pursue other coaching opportunities. Coach Wright said of the future, "I thought that Coach Kerwin coming back will be another step forward for our program after our accomplishments last year and I'm really looking forward to watching what the Ducks do in the future." The entire Oregon Lacrosse family thanks both Coaches Clough and Wright for their dedication and commitment and wishes them continued success in the future.

Duck Men Fare Well in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nv. – The University of Oregon Men’s lacrosse team faced their first major test of the 2008-2009 season as they competed in Las Vegas’ annual Best of the West lacrosse classic. Throughout the tournament, the Ducks showed that they can compete with the best in the country while learning what aspects of their game they need to improve for the spring season.

The weekend started out strong for the University of Oregon, as they won both of their Friday games. The Ducks first trial came against Westminster College of Salt Lake City, Utah. Oregon showed little rust after their travel and came out strong against the Griffins. The Ducks controlled the game from the start to beat Westminster, a very good squad in their own right.

The second Friday game proved to be the highlight of the tournament for the Ducks as they took on bitter out of conference rival BYU. The Cougars played NCAA D1 schools UMBC and Denver earlier in the fall so the Ducks knew they would be a polished opponent. The game was a battle throughout the contest, with the University of Oregon fighting back from deficits and responding to seemingly every goal scored by BYU. The Cougars had a chance to score the winning goal with 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter but were thwarted by Nick Musgrove, a sophomore goalie transfer from the University of Arizona. The Ducks won the opening faceoff of overtime but a hard shot from Kevin Clark was stopped by the BYU goaltender. BYU had two chances to score on their following possession but the Ducks’ defense held strong and gave their offense one more shot. Will DeSiervo, a senior midfielder, finished the game with a running left-handed shot and the bench stormed the field to celebrate with their teammates. Although the Ducks admittedly did not play a perfect game and did not look quite as polished as their opponents, their grit and athleticism won out in the end and proved that this will be a team to be reckoned with in the near future.

The Ducks finished out the weekend with three games on Saturday, playing Arizona, UC Davis, and Arizona State, a final four team from the 2008 season. Oregon took care of business against Arizona early in the day, lead by Will DeSiervo’s first quarter hat trick and the play of senior middie Jon Matusiefsky as well as lockdown defense from Cole Magnuson and Austin Zilis. The following games however showed the Ducks that they still have much work to do in order to get to the championship-caliber team that they wish to be as they dropped a low scoring contest to UC Davis 3-1 and lost decisively to Arizona State to end a grueling three-game day.

Despite dropping their last two contests, the Ducks were very enthusiastic about their performance in Las Vegas. Coach Andrew Clough said, “The tournament was very good to get a feel for where we’re at as a team right now. We showed that we have the sheer athleticism and team chemistry to be a major contender this season and we also got to see what we need to work on most in order to be a championship level club.”

The Ducks will finish off their fall season with their annual alumni game on November 14^th and the Oregon Fall Classic on the weekend of November 21^st.

John Grant to miss 2009 season

(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks General Manager Regy Thorpe announced today that forward John Grant will miss the 2009 National Lacrosse League season. Grant underwent emergency surgery Friday evening in Peterborough, Ontario, to remove an infection in the ACL in his left knee.

"We wish John all the best and pray he has a safe and speedy recovery," said Thorpe. "To say that we will miss him is surely an understatement. We fully expect him to be around as much as possible as he is very much still a part of this team. We're counting on the rest of the team to step up in his absence and play some solid lacrosse."

"It's very unfortunate, especially at my age, but I'm going to work as hard as I possibly can to get back into game shape and play for Rochester again," said Grant, 33. "I want to be there as much as I can throughout the season to support my teammates."

Grant underwent surgery Tuesday of last week on his elbow and knee to remove an infection that was beginning to migrate from his elbow to his knee. Grant went into surgery just two days later on his knee to remove more of the infection after an MRI discovered the first surgery failed to successfully remove it all.

After his second knee scope, Grant was forced into emergency surgery last Friday when doctors discovered the infection was getting worse as it started to attack his left ACL. As a result, the doctors in Peterborough had to remove his entire ACL and the screws, which attached the ligament to the bone.

Grant will be in a knee brace from four to 12 months, at which time he will enter another surgery to re-insert his ACL. The doctors will only operate on Grant once the infection is completely gone. In the meantime, Grant is being treated with various antibiotics to combat the infection.

Grant completed his ninth season with Rochester in 2008. He is the team's all-time leader in goals (394), assists (417) and points (811). Grant is among the Top 5 point producers in league history. The Peterborough native is also a five-time NLL First Team All-Pro (2000, 2000-01, 2005, 2006 and 2007), and a two-time Second Team member (2001-02 and 2002-03). In addition, he has been selected to play in the league's all-star game six times: 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. He was also the 2000 NLL Rookie of the Year.

In 2007, he won the NLL Champion's Cup and was named the Game MVP. He also earned league MVP honors and was a First Team All-Pro. The forward led the NLL with 51 goals and 111 points.

This summer, Grant earned his second straight Bud Light Major League Lacrosse MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards as he led the Rochester Rattlers to their first ever league title in franchise history. He also led the MLL in scoring for a second straight campaign. In addition, he led the Peterborough Lakers to the Ontario Lacrosse Association major Series Finals.

The Knighthawks will open their 2009 National Lacrosse League schedule at Chicago on Saturday, December 27th. The Knighthawks will battle the East Division Shamrox at 8:00 p.m. Rochester will also host Chicago in their home opener on Saturday, January 10th at 8:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena.

The Knighthawks enter their 15th season in the National Lacrosse League in 2009. Rochester won the 2007 Champion's Cup, which was the second title in the franchise's history. Rochester won its first championship in 1997.

JAX at Tualatin Hills Party in the Park

PORTLAND, July 14, 2008 - The Portland LumberJax are about to take their indoor lacrosse game outdoors for a giant party in the park. On Saturday, July 26th, Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD) will host its third annual Party in the Park from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at its Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex on 158th and Walker Road in Beaverton. The Annual Party in the Park is THPRD's biggest community event of the year and is FREE to the public.

Jax goalie and Community Relations Director Dallas Eliuk and other members of the team will be on hand from 12-3 p.m. to hold lacrosse clinics, sign autographs, and mingle with fans. Clinics will last approximately 40-minutes and will involve an introduction to the game, light demonstration and plenty of time for interaction. At the conclusion of the clinic, there will be ample time for autograph seekers. Clinics will run from 12-12:40, 1-1:40 and 2-2:40.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own lacrosse sticks, but the Jax will also have sticks for participants to use.

"Lacrosse continues to be the fastest growing sports in the United State", said Eliuk. "It's always fun to interact with kids who bring such excitement to the game."

In addition to the Jax lacrosse clinic, Party in the Park features a full day of giant inflatables, arts and crafts, music and entertainment, sports and other clinics and demonstrations.

"Party in the Park has quickly become a major summertime event in the Beaverton area, one that people can really look forward to," said THPRD superintendent of Programs and Special Activities Lisa Novak. "With even more activities this year, we think it will get even bigger."

Formed in 1955, THPRD is the largest special park district in Oregon, spanning about 50 square miles and serving more than 200,000 residents in the greater Beaverton area. The district provides year-round recreational and educational opportunities for people of all ages.

Eugene, Or. - Andrew Clough and John Wright have been named co-head coaches of the University of Oregon men's lacrosse team, it was announced today by team officials. After taking the reins as interim coaches for the remainder of the 2008 regular season and post-season, the duo interviewed with administrators and returning players and were offered the position shortly afterward. After getting a taste this spring of what to expect, the team is confident in the positive energy and knowledge of the game that Clough and Wright will bring to the table. There is no doubt that they are fully capable of maintaining and improving the quality of the program at large in the coming years.

Clough, a native of McLean, Virginia, was a former midfielder for the University of Oregon, and has served as an assistant for the team during the fall 2007 season. Clough was a starter for the Ducks for two full seasons and was among the team leaders in goals and assists until his senior season was cut short by a knee injury. All three of the seasons that Coach Clough was a member of the Ducks were capped by PNCLL championships and national tournament invitations.

"It was my good fortune to have outstanding teammates and great coaching during my career at Oregon, and I will do everything I can to keep things moving in a positive direction for the program," said Clough.

John Wright comes to the University of Oregon from a defensive coordinator position at Churchill High School in the Eugene area. He graduated from the U of O in 2006 with degrees in psychology and political science. In 2007, he helped Churchill to its first final four playoff appearance, and was an assistant to Oregon coach of the year Jack Stoddart. Prior to moving to Oregon, John was the founder and head coach of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he led his team to a conference championship in its first year, 2002.

"I'm honored that my alma mater has taken note of my accomplishments after leaving the team as a player, and I am excited about the opportunity to help lead these men to glory," said Coach Wright of the opportunity to lead the Ducks in the coming years.

In addition to naming Clough and Wright to the head coaching positions, the Ducks announced that senior Jon Matusiefsky will be named head club coordinator for the 2008-2009 season, taking over for graduating senior Jeff Brunelle.

MLL PDX TEAM CLEANS UP IN MLL DRAFT

A sneak peek into the future of field lacrosse, as well as a preview of MLL PDX 2008 participant New Jersey Pride, was offered Wednesday, May 28th as the Pride acquired a total of 10 new players in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft. With four of the first 10 picks, New Jersey began its restructure by selecting Duke All-American attackman Matt Danowski with the Second Overall Selection.

Danowski is the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history with 353 points. He scored 36 goals and added 48 assists this season for the Blue Devils as a fifth year senior.

Before the First Round was over, the Pride would also acquire Johns Hopkins midfielder Stephen Peyser, Maryland defenseman Joe Cinosky and Albany midfielder Jordan Levine.

Stephen will join his brothers, Greg and Michael, who also play for the Pride. Peyser led the NCAA with 113 ground balls collected in 2008 as he earned All-American honors. A 2008 All-American, Cinosky scored one goal, added one assist and collected 46 ground balls for the Terrapins in 2008. Levine was third in scoring for Albany with 13 goals and 20 assists as he also earned All-American accolades.

In the final three rounds, the Pride also acquired Duke All-American defenseman Tony McDevitt, Hofstra midfielder Kevin Unterstein, Syracuse midfielder Dan Brennan, Princeton All-American goalie Alex Hewit, Salisbury attackman Matthew Hickman and Navy All-American attackman Nick Mirabito.

LUMBERJAX ASSISTANT COACHES?

After reading on another web site about the “firing” of the two Assistant Coaches of the Champion’s Cup Finalist Portland Lumberjax, I thought something was not right. A team that just came within two goals of winning the Champions Cup firing Coaches?

So rather than assume the coaches were actually fired, and seeing as no source from the Lumberjax was quoted, I decided to do something novel, and ask someone within the oranization. I spoke with the Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan, who offered the following response:

“Jeff McComb and Jeremy Tallevi were not fired by the Portland Lumberjax organization or by me. Being fired usually means you are under contract and their contracts have expired. They are both outstanding coaches. They are extremely bright lacrosse minds and are diligent workers. If they were not top notch coaches I would not have kept them with me for 4 years. This was strictly a business decision by the organization. It was no longer financially viable to fly coaches in from Ontario and that is the only reason. I would go to war with those 2 guys any day of the week!”

Buffalo Bandits defeat Portland Lumberjax 14-10

The Buffalo Bandits defeated the Portland LumberJax Saturday night by a score of 14-10. The win now moves Buffalo to 10-6 on the season.

John Tavares led the Bandits in scoring with eight points (4+4). Brett Bucktooth and Roger Vyse each lit the lamp twice and posted two assists. Cory Bomberry tallied four assists. Mike Accursi and Kevin Dostie each had three points (1+2) in the game. Ian Llord put one in the net and finished the night with two points (1+1). Delby Powless and Kyle Laverty also put one past the Portland net minder. Pat McCready posted two assists. Goaltender Mike Thompson tallied his second assist of the season.

Chris White led Buffalo with 15 penalty minutes in the game.

Mike Thompson made 46 saves on the night. The net minder allowed 10 goals off 56 shots on goal.

Buffalo's next home game will be Friday, May 2 in their first game of the playoffs. Their opponent has yet to be determined. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $19 to $29.

PORTLAND, April 17, 2008 - Professional indoor lacrosse has stunned Portland fans since the Portland LumberJax arrived in 2005. Now, the City of Roses will get a taste of the outdoor game as it hosts a week long lacrosse extravaganza that will culminate with the two-time defending Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Champion Philadelphia Barrage and New Jersey Pride playing on Saturday, August 9th at 7:30 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium.

MLL PDX will be more than just a showcase. A week of lacrosse clinics and tournaments will be the pre cursor to the final regular season game between the Barrage and Pride. Playoff positioning will most certainly be on the line.

"We're delighted to be bringing Major League Lacrosse back to the Pacific Northwest as part of MLL PDX," said David Gross, Commissioner of Major League Lacrosse. "Back in 2004 when the MLL Wild West Tour stopped in Seattle, I remember that there was quite a contingent from the Portland area that traveled up for the game."

Barrage attackman Ryan Boyle, third in the MLL with 58 points in 2007 and Pride defenseman Ryan McClay, who finished sixth in the league with 70 ground balls collected, will be two of the many players from the Barrage and Pride who will hold an on field youth clinic at 5:30 p.m.

The Barrage and Pride begin formal warm-ups at 6:30 p.m. before their 7:30 p.m. face-off. Philadelphia won both meetings last season by three goals in each game, so revenge will be on New Jersey's minds.

Portland, Oregon—April 10, 2008- Rhino Lacrosse and Oregon Starz have formed a partnership that will result in Select Teams comprised of the best lacrosse talent in the state of Oregon. Oregon Starz Select Teams will become part of Rhino Lacrosse, a company that has been providing lacrosse clinics, leagues, select teams and events in the greater Portland area for the last two and a half years. Coaches from both programs will join together, creating an elite level coaching staff to train youth and high school players.

Starz Lacrosse was founded in 2004 and currently runs clubs in Seattle, Tacoma, Northern and Southern California, Las Vegas, Arizona and Austin. PORTLAND, March 1, 2008 - All-Star forward Ryan Powell scored five points (1 goal, 4 assists) and fellow All-Star forward Dan Dawson scored four points (1 goal, 3 assists), but it was to no avail as the Portland LumberJax fell to the Edmonton Rush 9-7 Saturday night in front of 7,744 at the Rose Garden Arena. Despite the loss, the Jax (3-6) still remain tied for third place as the Calgary Roughnecks (3-6) fell to the Toronto Rock, 9-7.

The game began with two quick Edmonton scores. Portland got on the board when Powell scored on a fast break off a pass from All-Star defenseman Brodie Merrill (2 goals, 1 assist) with 8:51 left in the first quarter.

After another Edmonton score, forward Peter Morgan scored with 7:45 to play to cut the Edmonton lead to one. Powell and forward Dawson worked the ball deep in Rush territory before setting P. Morgan up for the goal.

Merrill scored ten-seconds into the second quarter tie the game at three. However, the tie was short lived as Edmonton countered with 13:07 left in the half to earn a 4-3 lead.

The defense for both teams settled in, trading possessions for nearly six minutes until forward Matt Holman (2 goals) scored with 7:22 left in the second quarter to tie the game at four. Derek Malawsky and Powell were credited with assists on Holman's third goal of the season.

Tempers flared with 4:47 to play in the half as former Arizona Sting teammates Dawson and Edmonton defenseman Mike Grimes mixed it up, resulting in five penalty minutes for both players.

The Rush closed out the half with an AJ Shannon goal with 1:35 left to take a one goal lead into the break.

Edmonton continued its scoring streak, netting the first two goals of the quarter until Merrill took a pass from forward Spencer Martin (2 assists) and slipped one past Rush goalie Curtis Palidwor with 5:30 left in the third to make it 7-5 in favor of the visiting team. Transition player Tyler Codron was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Portland continues its resurgence as Dawson scored with 4:22 left in the third to trim the Edmonton lead to one.

The Rush came back with a goal with 1:12 left in the third to take an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Edmonton scored first in the fourth quarter, as Shannon tallied the hat trick to extend the lead to 9-6. Holman would add a late goal to make it 9-7, but the Rush came out victorious for their first win of the season.

Notes: Powell has scored in all 36 career regular season games he's appeared in...Powell has also tallied an assist in 35 straight games...P. Morgan has scored in all 39 career regular season games he's appeared in.

MLL and ESPN2 announce full schedule

Boston, MA (February 26, 2008) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced the ESPN2 television schedule for the upcoming 2008 season, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. The network will air eleven games this season, all of which will be broadcast in high-definition.

"I think that fans will be very excited when they see the schedule that ESPN has put together for us this season," said Gross. "Not only does this schedule feature some great match-ups, but amongst the live broadcasts you're also getting the All-Star Game, the first Semi-Final Game, and the NB ZIP Championship Game. This is our sixth season with ESPN and they have proven to be a most valued partner in helping grow the MLL and the entire sport of lacrosse."

ESPN2 has been the national television home of Major League Lacrosse since 2003, when the two parties agreed on a two-year commitment. In 2004, ESPN aired the New Balance Championship Game, making it the first live national telecast of a Major League Lacrosse competition. In November of that same year, ESPN and MLL agreed on another two-year contract. In 2007, Major League Lacrosse and ESPN signed a multi-year agreement which extends their relationship through the 2016 season.

Last season, ESPN introduced goalie cams, telestrators, and player microphones to the MLL broadcasts in an effort to give fans a better feeling for the intense action that takes place on the field. Also, all of last season's games were broadcast in high-definition for the first time. Prior to the start of the 2007 season, ESPN sold presenting sponsorship of their MLL telecasts to the U.S. Marine Corps. And earlier this month, the league announced that DICK'S Sporting Goods would become the presenting sponsor of the helmet cam.

The 2008 national broadcast schedule kicks off live from Harvard Stadium on Friday, May 23rd when the Boston Cannons host the Rochester Rattlers.

2/25/2008 - Brodie Merrill Named All-Star Starter

PORTLAND - Portland LumberJax defenseman Brodie Merrill has been named a starter in the 2008 National Lacrosse League All-Star Team, as announced by the league today. Merrill will be joined by forward Jeff Zywicki of the San Jose Stealth, forwards Dan Carey and Gavin Prout of the Colorado Mammoth, defenseman Eric Martin of San Jose and goalie Gee Nash of Colorado as starters for the West Division. The NLL's eighth All-Star Game will be held at Rexall Place in Edmonton on Sunday, March 16 at 1 p.m.

Now a three-time All-Star, Merrill was selected to last year's All-Star team, but was unable to play due to injury. In 2006, Merrill added an assist and collected 13 loose balls as the West edged the East, 14-13.

"I believe Brodie is the most complete lacrosse player in the NLL," said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "Every game we assign him to check our opponent's top offensive players and he responds by completely disrupting their offense."

Arguably the league's top defenseman, Merrill leads the league with 97 loose balls collected. He's also amassed 18 points on nine goals and nine assists through the first eight games for the Jax (3-5). Last weekend, Merrill collected his 500th career loose ball and scored five points (two goals, three assists) as Portland rolled to its second straight win, defeating the Calgary Roughnecks 13-9.

"Fans across the league - and in particular here in Portland - understand that he's not only an All-Star, but a Most Valuable Player candidate," added Keenan.

Voting was determined by a combination of fan, league media, and GM/Head Coaches. Reserves will be selected by each All-Star coach and will be announced later this week. Each All-Star team will have 18 players, which includes 16 runners and two goalies. All of the league's 12 member clubs will be represented by at least one of their players in the All-Star Game.

2/22/2008 - Holman sparks rally as Jax win 13-9

PORTLAND, February 22, 2008 - Trailing 8-7 early in the fourth quarter, the Portland LumberJax needed a jolt to rally the team from a one goal deficit to the Calgary Roughnecks. The Jax found their surge in forward Matt Holman, who scored with 11:54 to play to ignite a 5-0 run that led to a 13-9 Portland victory in front of 7,349 wild fans at the Rose Garden Arena on Saturday evening. The win was the second in a row for the Jax (3-5), who moved a half game in front of the Roughnecks (2-5) for third place in the wild, West Division. Forwards Dan Dawson (2 goals, 3 assists) and Derek Malawsky (1 goal, 4 assists) and defenseman Brodie Merrill (2 goals, 3 assists) all had five points apiece in the winning effort.

"This was possibly the most complete game as a franchise we've ever played," said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "It was a complete effort as we put together all facets of the game."

Malawsky found the back of the net first for Portland, cutting through and taking a pass from forward Ryan Powell (2 assists) who was fed by transition player Scott Stapleford to give Portland a 1-0 lead with 12:20 left in the first quarter. Calgary evened the game with 7:55 left on a goal from Kaleb Toth.

The Jax took their second lead of the game at 2-1 when forward Peter Morgan (3 goals) scored on the power play with 3:25 left. Dawson and Martin were credited with assists on the goal.

To open the second, the Roughnecks evened the game once again with 11:14 left in the second quarter on a transition goal from Nolan Heavenor. Once again, Heavenor struck with 9:54 left until the break to give Calgary its first lead.

Calgary continued to fire away, extending the lead to two as Jeff Shattler scored with 4:58 left. Portland answered back as defenseman Richard Morgan (2 goals) beat Calgary goalie Pat Campbell with 3:28 remaining in the half to cut the Roughneck lead to 4-3. Merrill assisted on R. Morgan's third goal of the season.

After reloading their arsenal at the half, the Roughnecks came out blazing, scoring the first two goals to extend their lead to three. Portland, however, had an ace up their sleeve. Gunslinger Dawson came back with 12:12 left in the third, shooting past Calgary goalie Ryan Avery to make it 6-4 in favor of the Roughnecks.

The 2-0 run ended as Calgary struck back with 10:52 in the quarter, extending the lead to 7-5 in favor of the road team.

Portland once again cut the lead to one as it scored off a fast break. Merrill and R. Morgan worked a series of exchanges before R. Morgan scored with 9:06 to play in the third.

Calgary came back, putting one past Jax goalie Matt King with 4:18 left in the third to extend the lead to two. However, Portland had the least laugh of the quarter. Off a rebound, P. Morgan scored his second goal of the game with 1:32 left in the third to make it 8-7 in favor of Calgary heading into the final quarter of regulation.

Playing in his first game since Feb. 2, Holman tied the game at eight with 11:54 left off a pass from Martin on the power play. The goal was Holman's second of the season, and could not have come at a better time.

Holman's goal began a scoring streak, as Martin scored with 9:35 to play in regulation to give Portland its first lead since the first quarter. Malawsky and defenseman Ian Crashley assisted on Martin's fourth goal of the season.

Dawson kept the run going, draining a deep perimeter shot to make it 10-8 in favor of the home team with 7:33 to play. Merrill and Malawsky tossed the ball around the perimeter, until Mr. Dangerous scored.

The lead continued to grow as P. Morgan notched the hat trick on a breakaway goal with 7:08 left. The 6'6" brute force could not be stopped as he took the ball the length of the floor and bested Campbell to make it 11-8.

The outpour continued as rookie forward Cory Conway scored with 2:43 left and then Merrill scored his second goal of the game with 2:01 to play to put the exclamation mark on the victory. Calgary would add a late goal, but it didn't matter as the Jax won 13-9.

King stopped 24 of the 33 shots he faced and P. Morgan collected 11 loose balls, a Portland career-high.

Notes: Powell has scored at least one point in all 35 career regular season games he's appeared in with Portland...Powell has tallied an assist in 34 straight regular season games...P. Morgan has scored at least one point in all 38 career regular season games he's appeared in with Portland...Merrill collected his 500th career loose ball in the first quarter...With the hat trick, P. Morgan is back in the franchise lead with 50 goals.

2/20/2008 - Merrill earns player of the week honors

PORTLAND, February 20, 2007 - Portland LumberJax defenseman Brodie Merrill has been named the National Lacrosse League's Transition Player of the Week for week eight, the league announced today. Merrill, the NLL's loose ball leader with 89, scored three goals, added one assist and collected 10 loose balls in a 14-8 obliteration of the Edmonton Rush on Sunday.

The two-time All-Star tied a career-high with the three goals he sent past Edmonton in the team's first home win of the season. This year, Merrill has scored 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists).

"Brodie played last week like he plays every game," said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "He's consistently the best defensive player on the floor, an absolute beast when the ball hits the carpet and the most dangerous transition player in the game today."

Overall, Merrill is Portland's all-time loose balls leader (499). He's also fourth all-time in goals scored (28), third in assists (57) and third in points scored (85).

In 2007, Merrill led the Jax and the NLL in loose balls collected with 196. Merrill is one of only three players to lead the NLL in loose balls collected (Jim Veltman and John Tavares) since the statistic became official in 1992.

This is the first player of the week award for Portland since last season, when Merrill was named Transition Player of the Week for week three.

The weekly player awards are determined by a vote of the General Managers and Head Coaches of the league's 12 member clubs.

DUCKS READY TO FIGHT OFF VANDALS AND COUGARS

After starting their season off with a 12-4 win over Oregon State on February 9th, the Oregon Ducks are preparing for a 7 game homestretch. First up for the Ducks are the Idaho Vandals and Washington State Cougars this weekend.

"Blackmore definitely came up huge against the Beavs. We've hit it hard the past two weeks and our offense is beginning to really flow. The intensity has picked up, and the team continues to progress and come together more and more each week," Tiller said.

DUCKS vs. VANDALS
Saturday marks the first game of the season for the Vandals, who continue to establish a first-class program under the leadership of 2nd year Head Coach Ryan Hanavan. With no games to look at, not much is known about Idaho's new talent. However, a handful of new freshmen and transfers highlight this year's roster including Kreig Shaw. A standout midfielder at Boise State last season, Shaw transferred to Idaho in December.

Compared to previous years, the Vandals are also sure to have a more solid defensive unit on the field. Senior defender Rob McQuade (#4) makes his debut in black and gold after suffering a severe knee injury following his freshman season at University of Utah in 2005. Prior to the injury, McQuade had intended to continue his lacrosse-playing career at NCAA Division 1 Mount St. Mary's. After a year of rehabbing, he opted to transfer back west to University of Idaho. McQuade assisted under Coach Hanavan last year.

Oregon defender Jeff Brunelle (Senior, #12) and McQuade enter Saturday's game with unfamiliar hostility brewing. The two best friends grew up together in Boise, Idaho. While attending Bishop Kelly High School, the duo played side-by-side for 3 years and founded the annual Idaho High School All-Star Games. After graduating, they continued to team up, taking on coaching roles in Idaho and winning 4 straight Brawl In McCall Championships as starters for the Woozles, a club team made up of college players from Idaho, Utah, and Oregon.

On going head-to-head with McQuade, Brunelle, a fourth year veteran at Oregon, said "It's rare that I ever get to play against someone from my high school, and it's great to see Rob make a return. We've been talking all week, but I think that will end on Friday. It's going to get heated." McQuade declined to comment.

DUCKS vs. COUGARS
Following the Idaho game, Oregon faces another unknown on Sunday when they go up against the Washington State Cougars. After disbanding two years ago, the Cougars have re-established themselves in Pullman and begin their season against the Ducks this weekend as well. With a 20-man roster and strong leadership, this Cougars squad is sure to make a run at competing in the PNCLL this season.

With no games last weekend, the Ducks took action in the community, hosting a clinic that brought 35 local high school players out to prepare for their upcoming season. The clinic included instruction from the entire Oregon squad.
